Everyone older than 50 remembers Mark Fidrych, the goofy rookie pitcher for Detroit who went 19-9 in his first season, even beating the Yankees 5-1 in that year. Dubbed “the Bird”, Fidrych was well known for talking to the ball, grooming the mound with his bare hands, and generally acting like a screwball. After winning rookie of the year in 1976, he never accomplished much after that, and was out of major league baseball in 1980. He died in a freak accident in 2009, at the age of 54. Here’s a video of his win against the Yankees.
A couple of days ago, the National Journal predicted that firebrand, and overall arrogant narcissist, Ted Cruz, the freshman Senator from Texas, was going to have a career very similar to Fidrych. Cruz’s antics really wind up the base, made up mainly of racist mouth breathers who are residents of the Fox News/Drudge Bubble, who cheered as Cruz pushed the US to the brink of disaster while supporters waved a Confederate Flag in front of the White House and mainstream Republicans stood by powerless to stop the mass political suicide. National Journal writer Beth Reinhard also predicted that after the shutdown that cost an estimated $24 billion and shook the markets, big Republican donors condemned Cruz and the shutdown. In an Odd Couple moment, the Chamber of Commerce joined with the AFL-CIO to condemn the shutdown. Cruz is receiving a lot of grassroots donations, but without big business contributions, Cruz’s national ambitions are dead before they start. In other words, he’s another Sarah Palin, just from the other gender.
We can only hope that the National Journal is right. Cruz, without hesitation, is the worst thing to happen to the US Senate since Joe McCarthy lead the witch hunt against supposed “Communists” from 1950 to 1954, almost single-handedly bringing the US government to a standstill while slandering hundreds of loyal Americans. With any luck, Cruz will have a similar downfall.
