The government shutdown orchestrated by the Republicans is backfiring in weird ways. Clearly the polls show that it’s the GOP that is taking the lion’s share of the blame for the shutdown, demonstrating that most Americans are paying at least a little attention to our looming fiscal crisis. The other backfiring, though, is the on radical right whose hatred of the President has been fueled by hate radio, Drudge, and Fox News. There are several Washington protests planned this weekend; one odd one is by vets demanding that memorials that have been closed by the shutdown be re-opened, and another (even more odd) one where truckers are planning on coming to DC to “shut down America,” whatever that means, and to somehow arrest members of Congress. We don’t believe that’s going to end very well for anyone, especially the truckers themselves.
More strange (and disturbing), though is how the Twitterverse has exploded with hateful, and stupid tweets, including death threats to the president. The folks over at public shaming.tumbler.com have documented a bunch of the tweets. Here are just a couple of examples:
The marches and road blocking being threatened are stupid since these actions won’t accomplish anything; but, how really stupid (or hate filled) does one need to be to actually threaten the life of the President in public? We would say pretty stupid, and they should expect those guys in black Suburbans wearing dark suits and sunglasses to be showing up at their front door.
This entire issue is easily solved if the House Republicans would take off the suicide vest. Until they do, the rest of the crazies will continue to come out of the woodwork.
