At the end of an interview with Secretary of State John Kerry on Fox News Sunday yesterday, Chris Wallace had “one final question”:
“One final question, sir, and we have less than a minute left. You talk about this is going to make it worse for Assad. After the president announced his decision, officials in Damascus were saying that the president had flinched, had made a joke of the American administration. A newspaper out in the streets of Damascus today calls this, quote, “the start of the historic American retreat.”
Haven’t you handed Syria and Iran at least a temporary victory, sir?”
“Officials in Damascus” and “a newspaper out in the streets of Damascus” as if it were the Syrian version of the New York Times or the Washington Post. No, it was Al Thawra, the Syrian state-run newspaper, that made these claims.
But then again, it shouldn’t be too surprising. One organization whose aim is to disseminate propaganda would have no problem citing another as its source.
