Yes, I remember "then" well. Ronald Reagan charmed the gullible public with "trickle down" economics all the way to the Presidency (which his running mate George HW Bush referred to correctly as "voodoo economics").
And once in office? He had to answer for his tax cuts for the rich in conjunction with unchecked government spending as if he were a drunken sailor with the biggest budget deficit in history at that time and a resulting severe recession with unemployment over 10% (and the wingnuts whine with 8.2 percent now). So what did Ronnie have to do to pull the economy out of his bad voodoo mess to get re-elected? He bit the bullet and raised taxes to pull the economy out of the recession.
