Rick Perry On Gay Marriage

August 17, 2011 By Friends of Keith 20 Comments

Here is what Texas Governor and Presidential candidate Rick Perry said a few weeks back about New York State deciding to permit gay marriage—

“That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me,”

However, after being pressed on the issue by his far-right evangelical allies, here is what Governor Perry said on the same topic a few days later—

“I probably needed to add a few words after that ‘it’s fine with me,’ and that it’s fine with me that a state is using their sovereign rights to decide an issue. Obviously gay marriage is not fine with me. My stance hasn’t changed…”

Here is how Governor Perry addressed gay marriage on p. 13 of his book Fed Up!-—

” If you don’t support the death penalty and citizens packing a pistol, don’t come to Texas. If you don’t like medicinal marijuana and gay marriage, don’t move to California.”

Yet at the same time, Governor Perry is on the record  supporting a Constitutional  amendment “.. that defines marriage between one man and one woman…”

What happened to Governor Perry’s view that the states should decide about gay marriage?

Rick Perry can’t stick to his guns on his alleged core issue of states’ rights even in the very first days of his presidential campaign. He buckles under pressure from the extremist far-right.

Given the number of views and flip-flops we’ve seen on just this one question, how many other times in the months ahead will we witness Governor Perry changing his mind and ditching his beliefs when it serves his political ambitions?

Here’s an interesting analysis of Perry’s “electability”, even in his home state of Texas. The gist of it is, even though he has won his elections for office every time, it is quite underwhelming, particularly in the last election. His margin of victory is historically way less and much slimmer than comparable Republicans in an overwhelmingly conservatively Republican state.
In other words, those right wingers consistently voting for other Republicans into office refused to vote for Perry in fairly significant numbers.
    http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/17/pondering-perrys-electability/?hp
Now imagine that on a national scale as he continues to insert his foot in his mouth from the get go and as he cluelessly plays up the dumb hick stereotype as his ticket to a “winning” national campaign.

Well, I wrote the President last night and advised him not to cut Rick Perry any “slack”. That Perry was like a pit viper and would strike at any warmth he perceives that the President is trying to spread and poison his campaign momentum and messages to the People.
    I hope he listened…

bubbabobcat – The only thing is, more and more people are “dumbing down” as we speak, and they might well out number the more seasoned right wingers in voting by the time this is all through. It still makes Perry a scary candidate.

I’ve read two knowledgable political experts argue BOTH that Perry CAN’T posible get elected nationwide and also that Perry CAN and likely WILL be our next president.
The interesting thing was that BOTH made perfectly good sense in their arguments TO ME. And we all know how analytical I am. Hey, funny guys can be smart too.
Personally, I have said before I think this guy will either shoot himself in the foot or fall down a manhole TRYING to get elected. He has too many different positions on too many topics and I don’t think he’s smart enough to keep them all straight.
As a nice loking guy with great hair too, I hate to see him giving us all a bad name.

carguy has a cooler car than Perry does, so I’m not too worried about that reputational lose he mentioned. But on another note, they have gone “badge crazy” over on the HuffPost blogs, and now you have to reward idiots badges of all kinds just to “fav” someone’s comment.
Maybe social engineering wasn’t such a good idea after all…

Perry switches positions quicker than a Times Square whore. Or is that not a nice thing to say?

I think its an ok thing to say but I didn’t see any whores in Times Square last time I was there. I think Rudy Giuiani’s fun removal, I mean clean-up, efforts in Manhattan ran them all out of there.

Very good points Neil. I would LOVE for Obama to do nothing but site Perry’s statements about wanting to secede from the Nation in the event he ends up facing him. Obama should bring that up EVERY SINGLE DAY, until it is ingrained in the nation’s psyche. He should just harp and harp and harp and harp on it.

Every single day and twice on Sunday. Parry’s position is that there should be NO government at all UNLESS he is in charge of it.
Shame such good looks were wasted on that nimrod.
(My dad used to use that word (nimrod) as the equivalent of “asshole” today. In his memory, and in the hopes that it does some good, I am reviving that “greatest generation” term in hopes they will help us “win back our country”.He and my granpa both would be very disappointed in where we are today. They gave us a real nice country and we broke it.)

Shortstuff, that was not nice of you at all. There’s no need to insult whores with that unseemly comparison to Slick Perry. At least prostitutes work for a living and only sell their bodies and not their principles.

Yeah Carguy. And If I were Obama I would seriously make this issue, that Perry has actually suggested breaking up the United States, and thereby destroying the Union, the center point of my campaign. I would not treat it lightly either. He should talk about it every single day. Make right-wingers and independents really start to question their own patriotism. Get them to think about what it means to be patriotic….
I mean my God, this Country fought a Civil War not THAT long ago in the scheme of things, over this issue, in which millions and millions of Americans died. Perry and his ilk, should should be treated like the treasonous bastards they are. They should not be allowed to get away with these comments!
Obama should hang this around Perry’s neck. Obama in debates, should actually say things to Perry like….”You actually are calling for the destruction of the United States with you’re comments. Do you know how irresponsible this is? Do you know how serious this is? I should have you arrested right now. Is this you’re plan if you become president of the Untied States, to then go ahead and break up the Country, that just elected you? What’s the matter with you”?
It would be a risky strategy for Obama to make this the absolute center of his campaign, but if he played his cards right, it could really pay off. He should go on the offensive on this issue, and NOT BACK OFF. It would make the Country rethink the proper role of the Federal Government. Get them to start to understand that THEY own the Government. Associate the Federal Government with the Democratic Party, and the Republican Party with, let’s face it, the treasonous institution it has become.

And from the Hurricane’s own AP feed:
“Democratic protesters waved signs and chanted ‘Go Back To Texas’ outside Popovers Bakery & Cafe on Thursday morning as the newcomer to the Republican presidential field tried to meet voters.”

That “Banjo Redneck strategy” doesn’t seem to work so well in the rest of the country you want to hypocritically both secede from and rule at the same time, does it Redneck Rick?

Wow, AquaNet-Man just gets more impressive every day…in addition to his pretty hair, his folksy Lonesome Rhodes-like charm and his (obvious) humility, he also seems to have (like Ginger Rogers) a talent for dancing backwards.

    I agree 100%.
I am hoping, however, that Obama will not have to run against Perry. If the Romney people are smart, and that may be debatable, THEY will adopt this strategy and destroy Parry. It simply doesn’t take much effort to fins holes in this guy’s campaign and, perhaps holes in his head.
If, regardless, Parry is the nominee Obama had better take off the gloves because Parry, his “big buck” benefactors and the totally unscupulous republican party are likely to do anything and say anthing to get him elected. There will be no ethical bar they can’t squeeze under. No lie they won’t tell and no electoral votes they won’t attempt to steal.
Let’s hope this nimrod trips over his own ego and falls into a manhole, his pistol discharges and he shoots himself in the foot.

I think what we are seeing is a schism between the real Rick Perry and the tea party Rick Perry. Then again, the group itself is a contradiction in terms. They oppose excessive government taxes and regulation and yet have no problem with the government telling you what you can do in your bedroom. So, I suppose seeing some contradiction from Perry makes some sense.
The whole states rights crap plays well in the sticks, but he is beginning to see some problems when you hit the national stage. People don’t want to hear a presidential candidate say, “they can do what they want.” At least, you don’t win too many GOP nominations that way. What’s funny is that his first answer (minus the digs in his book) was actually defensible. Yet, we see the problem when we have the battle between a clear message and a desire to pander. I suppose it is that pesky little full faith and credit clause that trips them up.

Running for president IS tricky. You have to give different answers to different groups of people and then REMEMBER what you said to whom and be able to defend your multiple positions when you are accused of being a “flip-floppper”.
Keeping all that straight just MAY be outside Perry’s skill set.

We all are well aware that Perry the Putrid will do anything, say anything at all to win.
He would sell his grandmother. He’d sell Anita. But she might welcome life with a human after being stuck with him for so long.
