First, I’d like to apologize for not being around much lately. As most of you know, we added a third child to our family this year and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to blog regularly while keeping up with extremely active, wonderful children all day.
That being said, I have a quick observation to share and discuss with all of you.
As I watch coverage of Michele Bachmann perusing a presidential campaign, I’m baffled that she thinks she has a snowball’s chance in Hell of securing the Republican nomination.
Then it occurs to me – of course she knows that she has no chance. She does, however, serve an important role in the overall Republican strategy.
The purpose of the nutjob candidate is not to steal votes from legitimate contenders; she can’t. The purpose of the nutjob candidate is simple. Attack, attack, attack. The Republican base and right leaning independents will latch on to the attack material (birth certificate, weak foreign policy credentials, etc) and carry that with them into the general election. This allows the mainstream center-right Republican candidate to keep their hands clean, secure the nomination, and sail into the general election unscathed while benefiting from the damage done by the nutjob candidate.
What, you ask, does the nutjob candidate gain from such an endeavor? It is simple. Unlimited fundraising opportunities from large far right donors, book deals, and a small blurb in history books. They gain a chance to get more camera time, more pundit discussion, and future speaking fees.
The Michele Bachmanns and Sarah Palins and Rick Santorums know that they have no legitimate chance at securing the presidency or the Republican nomination; that is not their goal. Their goal is simple: Advance the cause and cash in.
They will. You’ll see books, huge speaking fees, and the media will joke about their ambitions – but truly, the joke is on the media. Make no mistake – they’re well aware of what they are doing and they are fulfilling the goals they set by announcing the run for President.
P.S. – It is this bloggers opinion that Rick Perry has absolutely no intent to run for President. Palin and Perry are scheming to get Perry on the ticket as the next V.P. That’s more Perry’s M.O. Offer nothing but hollow rhetoric and ride a real politicians coattails to power (you DO remember Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry, no?)
