Stopping to Smell the Roses

Dear Daily Hurricaners,

For the last 3 years, blogging has pretty much been my life, either here or at that place that shall remain nameless. Whether looking for what to write about today, or reading and responding to comments, or looking for something to write about tomorrow, it's been time consuming and pushed aside other things.

So I'm going to take a few steps back starting today and take some time away from the daily wrangling of the political world to look after things that I've put off for too long. Also some time to re-organize, re-prioritize, and stop and smell the roses along the way, as the song says. How long, I don't know. I guess that depends on how many roses I run across. Small "r" and capital "R." ; )

Thanks to all those who've read my ramblings here over the last 18 months or so. I really appreciate it. This isn't goodbye, just so long for now.

Desperado

If I may..........

"Where ya headed, cowboy?"
"Nowhere special."
"Nowhere special. I always wanted to go there."
"Come on."

I discovered a new (?) TV channel that specializes in "golden oldies". Such as "All in the Family", "Dennis the Menace", "Hazel", "Gidget", "Maude", etc etc etc.

I certainly understand what you mean. If I could afford to not work....I'd be perfectly content. Or if I could win the freakin' lottery??

And calling Sarah Palin an idiot is an insult to idiots. She's worse than that. There is seriously something WRONG with that woman. Serious narcissistic disorder or something.

A few random observations.

Our leaders better damn well side with the Egyptian people and not Mubarak or any of his hand-picked successors or else we’re going to have another Iran on our hands. Somebody crack open a freakin’ history book.

My nightly TV watching is all screwed up since Olbermann left.

I found a new radio station from Alvin Community College, 89.7 FM. Reception gets a little dicey in some spots but they play great old rock and roll.

In my next life I want to be born rich so I don’t have to work. It’s colder than a well-digger’s ass in the Klondike. Come on spring.

Sarah Palin is still an idiot.

C'mon, Des....it's too damn cold to play golf right now. And the freeze is taking the smell off the roses.

At least chime in with your observations once in a while?

To quote the great Johnny Carson, "You are mistaken MOPAR breath."

I was instenuatining that you ALL three had been kidnapped by aliens. Although what they hell they would want with Sparkle is beyond me.

Des, I actually went to "the place that shall not be named" today for the first time in months and read your blog.

I posted this there and will repeat it here:

You will be missed by everyone on both sides of the debate.

Thank you for your blog and your friendship!

Bubba, you have to admit....poor Bart. Surrounded by all those middle school kids and he's still fighting to be one of the "in crowd". Let's give him some cheese to go with his whiiiiiine.

We know those goofballs are here because they go back to the darkness and talk about it endlessly among themselves. It must just really chap their hides that they can't constantly delete comments from here.

I wasn't going to bite on this bet except for Des' sly observational remark pertaining to that particular lobotomy (had to stifle a schnorkle on that one) and I knew that he will be back by this time next year when the office-sucking lobotomized repups will be stumbling, mumbling, delusionizing themselves in an all-out effort to pin those "kick-me" targets on their backsides. That's just too damn much temptation.

Hey Des you will be missed. I mean where else will wingnuts like bart (we know you read this bart because you whiiiiiine constantly about the Hurricane on the chron) get their persecution complex fix from? I hope you will at least make cameo commenter appearances here and there. You know, like a Progressive Elvis sighting. ;-)

As for carguy's conspiracy theory, maybe I'm just innocent (yeah, right!) but I was going with the kidnapped by the pod people theory. Not that there is anything wrong with that. ;-)

Cobbo, I'm COUNTING on another inevitable Palin forehead slap moment that would scream for a Des color commentary...sooner than later. ;-)

I think we need to get a pool going on how long it will be before the Repubs do something outrageous that drives Des back to the keyboard. Any guesses on the over/under?

Lies, scurrilous lies, rumors and innuendo. I deny even the implied insinuation of an allegation of misconduct. First of all I don’t mess around with married women (mostly) and as for JR, Homey don’t play that. Not that there’s anything wrong with it.

Now I know how Sarah Palin feels. Well, except for the lobotomy.

Vaya con Queso mi compadre...we'll be around when you return

Sparkie's probably taking a break to campaign for Ricky for Prez.

Or making a pilgrimage to Bizarroland Wasilla.

I won't miss Sparkie. I even quit telling her what an idiot she was. (It wasn't as much fun without my tag team partner.)

But, Des.....smell those roses, get rested, rejuvenated, enjoy your golf or tennis or whatever makes you happy, but don't stay away too long. We need you too badly.

OK, now I'm getting spooked. And YOU should too.
..
JR's "Gun blog" at chron.com announced that he is off "until mid-February".

I think we need to arganize a committee to investigate all this.

Des, Sparkle and now JR?????????????

You don't think?........................Nah.

THIS IS ONE HELLUVA COINCIDENCE!!!!

I just happened to wander over toe chron.com to discover that SPARKLE IS TAKING A BREAK.....too!

I've got to wonder what kind of a coincidence this is??????

"The Tater" is depressed.

Hi Des,

I'm wishing you lots of fun. And good music. I look forward to your return.

You are the man Des. I will be here.

I very much understand where you are coming from. I hope you are back soon.

Not being a native Houstonian (or a native Texan), I personally would love to hear more of these stories of yours. ;-)

Great story, loma.

Thanks, van. I know you’ve been around since the chron days and I appreciate you being one of the faithful who made the jump. Consider yourself added to the invite list.

The blimp will always be ready for Air Commander Shortstuff, but the champagne? Sorry 'bout that!

I have a great story to relate to Des upon this occasion, and it comes straight out of the annals of "Old Houston".

When I was in high school back in the '60's, I used to spend the night over at the Schlumberger mansion in River Oaks, as Pierre's son and I were in the same grade and good amigos.

I was always fascinated by the car parked in the garage next to the swimming pool, as it was the only Gull Wing Mercedes I ever got to see up close. It was a 1956 silver model and something you could just drool all over and dream of getting to drive.

I asked about the history of the car repeatedly, and one day - the story outed!

Back when the Southwest Freeway was brand new, Pierre would drive the car to downtown Houston to his office and back as if he were on the Autobann - all the time not realizing that Houston police cars were blowing up behind him in failed pursuits of the supercar.

Finally, one night in River Oaks, the dignitaries of the city showed up at Pierre's door. I'm talking the mayor, police chief, and various other city officials gained entry and audience with Pierre and abruptly stated that "since we can't catch you, we would like to present you with this Honorary Police Badge". Pierre was quite taken aback with the whole affair and apologized in broken English to the group.

That was what we used to be like back then, eh? What a lost world...

Hey have you had the blimp hidden away all this time? Don't tell me you drank the champagne up also!

Not to mention the love notes from the state troopers. Gets a bit pricey.

Des, I have enjoyed following your blog since the summer of '08. Most of what you bring to light I agree with and those few points I don't are not of any major dissent. I respect your logic and your independent siting of sources which has greatly enhanced your credibility consistently.
Hope: you recharge and return here soon and consider calling a meeting at some libating establishment wherein all of us hurricaners can show up wearing our blog handles as I would very much like to meet the many good people who contribute here and that I feel like I've known them for some time.
Thanks, van

Yeah, I guess 8 mpg at 220 mph is no vacation with all those gas station stops.

I'll have to settle for the Dodge and Surfside.

Hey Des,

Turn off the TV, gas up the Lamborghini, and grab some gears for the best beaches on Baja or something, eh?

I'll air drop some care packages along the way with the blimp!

:0(

Good for you! I had to make such an abrupt change last year. My life has taken a different direction and life is good. Sometimes it's possible to spend so much time changing the world that we forget how to enjoy it.

I understand the need to step away for a while, Des, but please please please....don't stay away from us too long.

I'll miss you!

Craig, I posted this at "the place to remain nameless" but for those who don't go there anymore here it is:

Craig, Thanks. Thanks for excellent subject matter and time you devoted to your blog over the years. On more than one occasion you gave me food for thought or opened my eyes to a viewpoint that would have otherwise not occurred to me.

Over the years your blog has become a forum for a variety of different political philosophies and leanings. Much have I learned from not just you but also from your "regulars".

Good luck, and once again thanks. Glenn

Des, I will look forward to reading your writings again. You'll be missed during your break.
Enjoy smelling the roses.
See ya later alligator))))

Hey Des,

It sounds like you're making a really good decision for yourself.

I'm about to do a major switch myself (I hope) from how I think throughout the day... I'm about to get married, and have not been working much, but that is going to have to change soon, just to support us. So, my life I'm thinking is going to be taking a 180 degree turn soon. I just won't be able to afford to budget my time thinking about "political" and other stuff too much..

It is good for people to make these changes from time to time I think, and to especially "smell the roses" like you said.

That being said..I have to say that I've really enjoyed reading your posts a lot, and appreciate the back and forth with the commenters. I like the far left views you hold, and they are most in line with the way I think.

So...get along now on that trail Desperado..and see you some where over the horizon..

Understood Des. I've had to do it a few times myself when things got too personal and I got a little too consumed. Enjoy your break.
