I was on the Today Show this morning talking about the blowout with Lester Holt. Have a look:

Truncated my comment by inadvertently (stupidly) using some HTML code. My 2nd try:
BP is reverting to form and getting awfully vague about the current situation. I'm still trying to grasp some credible rational for corking the well when the relief drilling is so close to target. The Today clip had some snippets that sort of suggest a possible engineering based motivation.
Anne Thompson indicated the system to capture 80,000 BPD is "partially being built," but gave no information about when the upgrade might be complete. She then stated the existing system can capture 35,000 BPD (assuming its still hooked in) if the valves were turned fully back on - but some oil would escape into the Gulf. But, maybe not. Now that they've verified the well can be shut in and still hold, I'm wondering if the cap might be used to throttle flow to less than 35,000 BPD, reducing internal well pressure somewhat yet still collecting all the flow to the surface using the existing capture plumbing. Would lowering pressure somewhat make it easier to kill the well?

Bob,
The 9-man committee being shortlisted for the technical/engineering investigation by the NAE and Research Council have no-one with competence in subsea oil and gas drilling/production, BOPs etc. Only 1 has something on drilling fluids.

What is going on? Worth investigating/taking a view if you have time.
Excellent blog.
