The Beginning of the End

We've been watching the trend now for a couple of years.  The Republican Party, having lost its way as its leaders, drunk with power after controlling national politics and much of the media for over 10 years, began reaping the crop of hate and intolerance it had cynically sown to attain that power.  Moderates and thinking people fled, or were drummed out of the party, as the GOP became a mere shadow of its former self while extremists, who had come up from the grassroots, gradually took control of state and national parties and began choking off reason and diversity.

Entire segments of the American population were condemned.  Weirdos began putting ridiculous planks in state party platforms about national religion, official language, women's choices, behavior in bedrooms, against science and advocating other narrow wedge issues.  Preemptive military invasion and warmongering, masquerading as "spreading democracy" and "fighting terrorism" replaced diplomacy.  Eliminationist rhetoric, systemic xenophobia and ignorance became admirable traits.  Everyone who disagreed, including all Democrats, were labeled traitors, treasonous, communists, socialists, etc, etc...you've heard all of the hate speech.  Moderate Republicans were run out of office in primaries funded by big donors and special interest PACs aligned against anyone not toeing the "patriot" line.  Bipartisanship died.  Partisanship was hailed as the goal, not a tool.  No quarter was given, no compromise allowed.  The government deadlocked.

Then the party began to fracture.  Extremist right wingers actively spoke out against the national candidate, John McCain, because he didn't stick to the talking points, although he tried.  Ignoramuses like Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber became icons.  Intellectuals were vilified.  Then...America elected a black man as President.  The fringe came unhinged.  Corporately funded astroturf protests sprung up around the country.  People who had never really paid attention took the corporate message hook, line, and sinker, repeating platitudes and idolizing morons like Glenn Beck.  Threats against the President poured in like never before witnessed.  Violence, always bubbling just below the surface, periodically erupted in places like churches and even the Holocaust Museum in Washington.  Wingnuts protested to get their "country back".

Mainstream Republicans, realizing too late that they'd let the genie out of the bottle, tried to put that genie back.  Stalwarts like Bob Dole began speaking out in favor of health care reform, only to be shouted down by the "base" who'd been fully indoctrinated in extremist ideology.

Then came the special election in New York's 23rd district.  The official GOP candidate for the seat, Dede Scozzafava, a moderate, was opposed by not only a Democrat, but a member of the Conservative Party, Doug Hoffman.  In this particular race however, leaders of the extreme wing of the Republican Party endorsed...wait for it...Hoffman.  Sarah Palin and Fred Thompson, among others, moved even further from mainstream Republicans by backing an opposing candidate.  Many followed, ignoring even Newt Gingrich, who urged support of the Republican.  Defections were so strong that today, Scozzafava withdrew from the race, ceding the victory to Hoffman before the election.  The damage is done.  Republicans are now officially divided.  One only need read a few lines of the bile being spewed by Michelle Malkin to understand how wide the divide has become.

What we are seeing could be the beginning of the end of the GOP for a generation.  With national figures backing extremists against party candidates, right wing media and bloggers supporting those endorsements and encouraging positions only supported by about 20% of the electorate, the ideologues have successfully dismantled the party.  For the first time in over 20 years, emergence of a third party seems actually possible, which would undoubtedly divide the right side of the political spectrum, virtually assuring dominance of the Democrats for some time to come.

With geniuses like Palin, Beck, and Rush leading the conservative movement, the Repubs should be really worried.  And the Dems should be making hay.  We'll see if they do that and step into the breach.

Yep, let's make big round bales of hay - they last much longer!

Good advise. I hope they listen. As talented as the current GOP is in shooting themselves in the foot....the Democratic party has lost any number of fingers by slamming the car door on their hand.

Note to Dems: The circular firing squad on the right continues unabated, leaving only the most hardcore and ideologically pure. Please please please don't fuck up so bad that the electorate would actually consider one of the wingnuts for public office. Practice good governance and become a shining beacon to lead the way.

They scare the bejeebus out of me. These fools are DANGEROUS.

I posted on this subject about a week ago with maybe the same title. It will be interesting to see what happens to the moderates.

Divide and conquer. You'd think the nutjobs had never heard of the concept. They're clueless as to what's really happening to their party though because they really and truly believe that the rest of the Country actually thinks just like they do.

No AntiSarah, I don't think that you are the only one. This scares the crap out of me and I don't scare easily.

Am I the only one who sees this trend as frightening? Because it would appear that the "conservatives" (aka the neo-nazis) are not just running moderates and reasonable-thinking people out. They are getting a toehold on political power in this country and it's getting stronger by the day.

Unfortunately, I don't see this as an opportunity for the Democratic Party at all. I see it as a power play by the Party of Teabaggers to steamroll across this country--precinct by precinct, county by county, state by state, and then our nation as a whole. And I see them succeeding if something isn't done to stop them.

Now...is there any one of us who REALLY thinks Halloween is over?

I'm sure those whackjobs consider Lugar (one of the Republicans I *do* admire!) a RINO.

All you have to do is see that EVERY SINGLE TIME a Republican dares to stand up against the blithering idiots now in control of the GOP, that person, be it John McCain or Olympia Snow, is dubbed "RINO". What the hell does that mean, "Republican In Name Only"? Talk about Nazi mind control!
It happens without fail.
Those in charge of the GOP (ie, Limbaugh) can not abide letting others have minds of their own.
And they have the gall to compare Pres. Obama to the Nazis.
Ha!
All their bullshit about taking their country back...well, we took OUR country back last November. With a resounding victory. The majority spoke and told the rightwing whackjobs to get lost. Their problem is that they are still pissed about it.
I hope the GOP does splinter and maybe a decent third party with moderates allowed will develop.
As it is, all that the GOP needs to do now is hand out the white sheets with registration cards. They're nothing more than the new, revised KKK.

There isn't any room for moderates in the party of Palin & Beck. They are literally forcing moderates to either conform to their idea of Conservative NeoCon Taliban Rule, or leave the Republican Party. I wonder what Dick Luger and the few sane Republicans that are left think of this mess.

This is sad for the Republican Party and more so for our country. "A house divided...."

I am sorry Scozzafava dropped out. I was really hoping she could face the fray. It's very sad. There appears to be no room in the GOP for anyone who is not hard core conservative to the right. They are hell bent on pushing out anyone they perceive as a RINO. People are slowly leaving the fold. Let us hope the DEMS take advantage of this and welcome others. We all need to work towards solutions to our problems.

is there any way dems can "make hay" by bringing
Dede Scozzafava into our fold to support the dem candidate? seems to me she is moderate enough and could come in like arlen specter. she should be thoroughly disgusted that michael steele, palin and the other trolls kicked her to the curb by brainwashing her constituents and swiftboating her campaign. and fox news was there every step of the way, having hoffman on daily toward the end of the campaign. now these tea party propagandists come where they have no business and pull the rug out from under a candidate who should have had her day at the polls. so we have the party of no and the party of NO!
